The Gungahlin Crematorium is the ACT’s only publicly owned crematorium officially opened at Gungahlin Cemetery on 15 March 2021. The crematorium is the second in the ACT, with the existing privately owned and operated crematorium across the road.
The opening of the crematorium has enabled Canberra Memorial Parks to help meet the increasing demand for cremations, with a government review finding 75 per cent of Canberrans choosing cremation over burial services, This is consistent with growing Australian and worldwide trends.
Why more Canberrans are choosing to be cremated at Canberra Memorial Parks?
- Our modern facilities including the Crematorium Viewing Room cater to religious and cultural preferences, particularly for Canberra's Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist communities who previously were required to travel interstate to be able to perform some of their traditional practices.
- At Canberra Memorial Parks, our customer service and operations team make all the difference. Meet Michelle Dariol who is the territory's first woman to operate a crematorium and just one of the friendly team members who support our community at Canberra Memorial Parks.
- We are proudly one of 1,250 crematoria worldwide that participate in a recycling program with OrthoMetals. OrthoMetals was founded in 1997 to recycle metals remaining after cremation from medical devices, like titanium hips, dental work and jewellery. The funds generated from this program will be returned to Canberra Memorial Parks in the future to support local community projects that align with its vision.
- Cremation has a lower environmental footprint than traditional burial practices and the Gungahlin Crematorium has been approved by the Environmental Protection Authority and complies with both Australian and European standards. While the environmental impacts of cremation vary depending on the casket selected, there are many environmentally friendly casket options to choose from.
- The Crematorium houses a bariatric model cremator which is able to accommodate oversize, larger and heavier coffins.
- We can arrange for your loved one’s ashes to be returned to you and your family or if you would like cremated remains to be interred here in Canberra, we have beautiful Memorial Gardens at Gungahlin and Hall and Memorial Rock allotments at Gungahlin and Woden.
The management of the Gungahlin Crematorium is governed by the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2020.
